For summer!
Now that school is out, there’s an influx of kids out and about looking for entertainment. This also means there are different concerns for their safety.
Some things to discuss?
Traffic
With how big our communities are growing and how long commute time is, drivers are more tired and stressed than ever.
- Tell them that just because someone is driving, doesn’t mean they’re paying attention.
- Look both ways before crossing the street and keep eyes off phones when walking.
- Wear a helmet when riding bikes, skating, blading, etc.
Water
One of the best parts about summer is playing in the water, no matter what age.
- Ensure they know how to swim and monitor when playing in the water.
- Have a buddy system, drowning is deceptively quiet.
- Make sure they have life jackets on the boat and discuss boat safety.
Heat
Heat related illness is just as much of a danger for kids as it is for workers.
- Never leave them in a warm car.
- Make sure they know to drink water frequently and rest in the shade.
- Teach them what heat illness looks like and who to contact if they/a friend gets sick.
Bites & Stings
Animals and bugs love the summer too!
- Tell them to always ask the owner before approaching someone else’s dog.
- Don’t surprise or try to scare an animal they don’t know.
- Teach children not to touch/throw things at nests.
- Don’t use insect repellent w/ more than 30% DEET.
- Wear long clothing when playing in long grass or hiking to avoid ticks and check them at the end of the day.
Young workers (14-24)
Keep the younger workers on your team in mind.
- Traditionally, they are more unaware of job site dangers and that they can affect anyone, at any age.
- Ensure they’ve taken the appropriate training(s) and are active participants in safety talks.
- Take them under your wing – mentors are priceless.
The safer young people are, the more fun they get to have during summer. No one wants to be holed up inside healing.
